Born in 1988 in Tokyo,
Aimi Odawara loved to draw even as a small child, Creating drawings in a humorous way similar to her current style of art.
She joined the manga club at her grade school with the hope to become a manga artist in the future.
After high school She moved on a graphic art school and then held her first-ever solo exhibition “PLAYING DEAD”
in 2012 through the recommendation of her friend upon graduation.
The show opened up her career as an illustrator, while her name recognition began to expand as she had contributed
her illustration to fashion magazine and provided her own designs to fashion brands.
The hit of a T-shirt she made as a fledgling illustrator in collaboration with JACKSON MATISSE in 2013
gave her great confidence. In 2014, she launched her own brand “I&ME” to make clothes featuring her artwork.
The brand was distributed nationwide and popular with its unisex design.
Her work has always been inspired by music and movies.
Because she grew up listening to punk and psychobilly music under the influence of her father,
her artwork clearly shows that punk culture is a part of her identity. As for movies,
she says she sometimes creates artwork that conveys her emotion or depression generated by watching film,
although she never draws any particular scenes she likes. She used to paint especially when feeling sad or frustrated,
but currently she does it with joy again on an everyday basis. According to her,
the change was happened because she become more relaxed after getting married in 2018.
She now uses acrylic paint and tablet computer as painting tools,
although watercolor paint was only a medium she used before that.
Her current work also includes paintings on larger papers and sculptures for interior decoration.
She is now up for a challenge to expand her range of activities such as making a children’s book.
Her ever-evolving yet steadfast style of art has been drawing increased attention. In 2018,
Odawara’s solo exhibition “HOUSE” held at BEAMS T store in Harajuku,
a venue at which various types of artists have had their show, ended in great success.
Although overseas exhibition were not something she was eager to do because of language barriers,
she is now aggressively planning to hold a show outside Japan in the near future.
With some upcoming group exhibition in Japan and abroad,
Odawara and her artistic activities gain great expectation.
